About — Lakes Of Cavan

There is an age-old saying that Cavan has ‘a lake for every day of the year’. Now, for the first time, the 365 lakes of Cavan have been listed and photographed for this book by photographer Hu O’Reilly.

Here you can take a visual journey through these lakes. Some of the lakes are steeped in folklore, with tales of white horses that magically appear and disappear on the lake’s edge, fairy people who live on the bottom of the lake, and pots of gold that are just beyond the reach of those trying to capture them. Enjoy amazing landscapes of the remote lakes in West Cavan, such as Lough Cam in the Cuilcagh Mountains and Derrynananta Lough on Benbrack Mountain. Lose yourself in the maze of numerous shallow lakes in the central and northern parts of the county including Lough Oughter, Inishmuck Lough, and Carratraw Lough. Take in stunning scenes of lakes of all shapes and sizes in southern and eastern Cavan such as Lough Sheelin, Lough Ramor, and Lough Gowna.

The photographs were taken through all seasons over eighteen months, and there is a focus on how people, animals, and wildlife interact with the lakes. With a foreword by the acclaimed Cavan writer Michael Harding and a comprehensive photographic index of 365 lakes, this is a book that anyone with an interest in Cavan, photography, or nature will enjoy.
